Special Education Teacher – Moderate to Severe Autism Job Description

We are seeking a compassionate, skilled Special Education Teacher to support students with moderate to severe autism in a structured, well-supported classroom environment.

Location: California, USA

Students may be non-verbal or minimally verbal, have cognitive delays, and demonstrate behavioural challenges as a form of communication. Ages range from early elementary through adult transition (up to age 22).

Key Responsibilities

  1. Design and implement individualised instruction aligned to IEP goals
  2. Provide functional academics and life-skills instruction
  3. Use evidence-based and ABA-informed strategies
  4. Support functional communication development (AAC/PECS experience preferred)
  5. Implement positive behavior supports
  6. Collect and monitor student data
  7. Lead and coach paraprofessionals
  8. Collaborate with families and multidisciplinary team members

Preferred Experience

Moderate to severe autism

Assistive & Augmentative Communication (AAC)

Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)

Data-driven instruction

Collaboration with speech-language pathologists

We’re looking for educators who are patient, structured, resilient, and deeply committed to helping students build independence and improve quality of life.

Qualification:

- Bachelors degree in Special Education or related field - Teaching qualification is a must (ATHE Level 6 diploma in teaching , B.Ed, etc) - ABA certification is preferred
