Head of Innovation Lab — Maker, Robotics & AI Job Description

Non-negotiables

  • Demonstrated portfolio of things you have built — physical, digital, or both. Show us,
  • don't tell us.
  • Experience coaching or mentoring young people in a building context (robotics club,
  • maker space, engineering camp, hackathons).
  • Deep familiarity with at least one VEX platform (IQ or V5), or comparable competitive
  • robotics (FIRST, WRO). If you have not run VEX specifically, you should be able to
  • explain how you would learn it in 90 days.
  • Willingness to be based at [campus TBD] and travel to other campuses as the program
  • scales.

Nice to have

  • Formal engineering degree (mechanical, electronics, mechatronics, CS with hardware
  • bent). Not required if the portfolio is strong.
  • ML/AI project experience — anything from an edge-deployed model to a computer vision
  • demo.Prior teaching or school experience.
  • Fabrication skills: welding, machining, casting, textiles.

What success looks like — 12 months

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Lab operational at pilot campus, safety-audited, with a published inventory and

equipment SOP.

VEX teams competing — minimum one IQ team and one V5 team registered and at a

regional event.

Grade 6–10 students have logged a minimum number of project hours in the lab; every

one of them has completed at least one build cycle from brief to demo.

Three curriculum modules written and taught: one making, one electronics/robotics,

one AI literacy.

A written scale-out playbook for the second campus, with equipment BOM, hiring

profile for the next lab lead, and timeline.

What we offer

  • A blank canvas and real budget. This is not a token STEM room. We are building this
  • properly.
  • Direct access to the Chief Learner's office. Decisions move fast here.
  • A network of five campuses to scale across, and a consulting arm (Equanimity Learning)
  • that will take this playbook to other schools once it works.
  • Compensation aligned with senior engineering or edtech roles, not standard teacher
  • scales.
  • Freedom to compete, publish, and represent DPS in the national maker and robotics
  • community.
